PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION: Botanical Name: Myroxylon balsamum Extraction Method: Steam distilled Aroma: Rich, balsamic, sweet vanilla-like undertone Origin: Salvador Common Uses: General – Balsam Peru A large tropical tree up to 25m high, with straight smooth trunk, beautiful foliage and very fragrant flowers. Every part of the tree including the fibrous fruit, contains a resinous juice. It is obtained from exposed lacerated wood, after strips of the bark have been removed. It is a’true’ balsam, which is collected in the form of a dark brown or amber semi-solid mass. The mesocarp of the fruit is fibrous, and the balsamic juice which is abundant is contained in two distinct receptacles, one on each side. The beans contain Coumarin, the husks an extremely acrid bitter resin, and a volatile oil; a gum resin, quite distinct from the proper balsam, exudes from the trunk of the tree and contains gum resin and a volatile oil; the tree commences to be productive after five or six years, and continues to yield for thirty years; the flower has a fragrance which can be smelt a hundred yards away. There are several fictitious Peruvian balsams found in commerce, but they do not contain the same properties. Balsam of Peru is warm and aromatic, much hotter and more stimulating than Balsam of Copaiba and is used for similar complaints. Uses – Peru Balsam essential oil, Myroxylon pereira, is used as a fixative and fragrance component in soaps, detergents, creams, lotions and perfumes. Description: Lemongrass essential oil is extracted through steam distillation from the leaves of Cymbopogon Flexuosus which is a tropical grass grown widely throughout southeast Asia. Common Uses: Lemongrass essential oil is used as a topical antiseptic and antifungal agent. It is thought to be a warming remedy for aching muscles and joints. Lemongrass essential oil’s aroma is stimulating and invigorating, and can be used for sluggish circulation and low energy. Athletes foot (tinea): Add 3 drops of Lemongrass essential oil and 3 drops of Tea Tree essential oil to a footbath or bowl of warm water, and let the feet or other affected part stay in the water for 5-10 minutes. After bathing, dry the affected area with a clean towel. With a clean cotton swab, apply the undiluted Lemongrass essential oil directly to the infected area. Cover with an adhesive bandage, and repeat the process 2-3 times a day until the infection is clear. If the undiluted oil stings too much add 10 drops of Lemongrass essential oil to a teaspoon of vegetable oil and use that instead. Low energy or tiredness: Add 3 drops of Lemongrass essential oil to 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and massage into your calves and feet, using strokes that move up the legs and toward the heart. An easy way to determine whether you are using therapeutic grade Tea Tree essential oil from Australia is by it’s aroma. Chinese Tea Tree essential oil has a strong camphor aroma whereas the Australian variety has a unique aroma which is slightly camphorous that comes from its active ingredient, Terpinen-4-ol. Tea Tree essential oil is primarily noted for it’s broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal effects, and recent research shows that it exhibits anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used in treatment of acne, boils, candida infections, tinea, sore throats and other inflammatory infections. The aroma is not particularly valued, however it can be blended with such essential oils as Lemongrass or Lemon Tea Tree, to improve the aroma. In fact, the cells responsible for fighting infection and foreign invaders in the body (your white blood cells) make hydrogen peroxide and use it to oxidize any offending culprits. The intense bubbling you see when hydrogen peroxide comes in contact with a bacteria-laden cut or wound is the oxygen being released and bacteria being destroyed. The ability of our cells to produce hydrogen peroxide is essential for life. Is not some undesirable by-product or toxin, but instead a basic requirement for good health. Newer research indicates we need hydrogen peroxide for a multitude of other chemical reactions that take place throughout the body. Also lactobacillus found in the colon and vagina produce hydrogen peroxide.
