Item : Lot of four (4) vintage New Old Stock ca. 1980s 25 ml tissue paper-wrapped, corked and foiled aluminum bottles of Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album) essential oil. This is genuine Mysore oil, steam distilled from Sandalwood originating in the State of Karnataka (formerly known as the State of Mysore) and manufactured by the Government Sandalwood Oil Factories / KSDL. The bottles are still sealed and have never been opened or unwrapped. A rare find and quite valuable! Today, there’s no Mysore Sandalwood oil to speak of that’s being distilled. KSDL, White Lotus Aromatics, Eden Botanicals — no company I know of has it because there aren’t enough mature trees right now in Karnataka. One major Sandalwood oil expert in the USA is Eden Botanicals. On their website, they say. Some Mysore oils are weak. If you find that to be the case with this item, so be it. In India, they always used Sandalwood oil as an attar base BECAUSE its light and takes on the scent of rose or whatevers being distilled into it. What the bottle says. The circular red logo is the coat of arms of Karnataka (two lion-elephants called Sharabhas standing, facing each other) and around this it looks to be: Mysore Government Sandalwood Co. With Mysore Guaranteed Pure inside that. Note that the Shimoga factory was also in the State of Karnataka but it ceased its operations many years ago. Ive seen bottles of Mysore Government Sandalwood oil from as far back as 1930 that had this same coat of arms on the label (theres a picture on the basenotes website). At some point, Karnataka Soaps & Detergents Limited (KSDL) started putting the Mysore Sandal Soap logo (just a singular lion-elephant Sharabha creature) on the sandalwood oil bottles and/or packaging, sometimes with the words From the House of Mysore Sandal Soap printed circularly around the logo. KSDL no longer sells a 25 ml size Sandalwood oil nor do they use this type of bottling / labeling. Ive seen three different oils from them recently a little 5 ml bottle in a pouch, a 9 ml bottle with a gold cap and tassel which comes boxed, and another little fancy glass bottle with a tall top or cap that looks like a birds wing. There are a lot of Sandalwood trees in the State of Karnataka (formerly known as the State of Mysore), but theyre too young to harvest until probably 2035 or so. KSDL used the last of the Mysore Sandalwood oil they had in stock.
